For several hundred years, Waikiki Bay and beach were used for 'surf bathing'
with various types of wooden boards.
The first Waikiki Roughwater Swim was swum on October 11th 1970. In creating the Swim, it was decided to 1) keep the classic and dramatic "crossing to that far distant shore" and not "round the bouys" 2) to have a community swim that is fully welcoming to all of the swim community including especially recreational swimmers and 3) to have ONE, BIG theatrical race, with no elite restrictions and allowing every one who thought they could swim the distance to be welcome.
